Es Castell

The town of Es Castell is the most easterly town in Menorca, situated at the mouth of Port Mahon, just 3 kilometres from the capital. The town has a long military history and was once considered the most strategic town on the island, so much so that the capital was moved from Ciutadella to Mahon.

The town is a popular and lively holiday resort, which benefits from its close proximity to the capital of Mahon. Those looking for a family beach holiday will probably not find it ideal, as the beaches are not on your doorstep. It is however, a charming town, steeped in history, with a very old British feel to it.

History
The town of Es Castell was developed when the British occupied the island, originally called Georgetown, the British occupation is evident with its Georgian architecture and military feel; the main town square was once the parade ground for the British army.

The town was originally set on a peninsula, where an island was formed, created by a man-made channel, which cut off the local hospital from the town, to ensure that infectious patients didn’t escape!

About town
The main town converges around the two inlets of Cala Fonts and Cala Corb and is a lovely morning town, as it’s the first place that the sun rises on the island.

Es Castell has plenty of amenities for holidaymakers, including shopping, restaurants and a buzzy nightlife. The main zone can be found at Cala Fons where many of the shops and
restaurants are actually built into caves, which sit in the walls of the harbour. There is a market twice a week.

For more substation shopping and nightlife, the capital city of Mahon is just 3 kilometres away.

Beaches
The two coves are ideal for sunbathing, attractive, but small, with calm waters. The beach at Mahon is more substantial and the nearby beach of Cala Pedera, is also a lovely beach to visit.

Places to visit
The town itself is delightful to wander around, and its history and culture are interesting for visitors. Further afield is the prehistoric village of Trepuca, which dates back to around 1500BC and has its own mini Stonehenge formation.

Outdoor pursuits
Watersport options are available in Es Castell, including wind surfing, sailing, paragliding and
diving.

Eating out
There is a wide variety of restaurants, serving traditional, international and local cuisine, concentrated in the town centre and in the harbour at Cala Fonts.

Climate
Menorca enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with often very warm temperatures even in
the winter. The summer months are long and lazy, with plenty of sunshine to enjoy.
